“The Arctic Nexus: Geopolitical Transitions and Europe’s Stake in the North”
Prof. Dr. Tomasz Brańka, Faculty of Political Science and Journalism, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań.
The Arctic is emerging as a critical arena in global geopolitics, shaped by shifting power dynamics and competing interests. This presentation examines the region’s transformation, focusing on the roles of traditional Arctic states and the influence of new actors. Special attention will be given to the European Union’s evolving Arctic strategy, emphasizing its geopolitical and strategic priorities. The impact of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine has further strained Arctic cooperation, raising questions about regional stability and governance. As militarization increases and multilateral dialogue falters, we may be witnessing the end of Arctic Exceptionalism - a once-cooperative region now succumbing to broader global tensions. Is the Arctic entering an era of conflict-driven geopolitics?
Dr. Tomasz Brańka is a professor at the Faculty of Political Science and Journalism of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. He pursued his academic training in International Relations in Poland and Sweden. His research centers on autonomous solutions in contemporary international relations, the role of non-sovereign entities in global politics, and regionalism, with a particular emphasis on the Arctic region.
