Advanced Research Seminar "Social Mobilization Beyond Ethnicity in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Past Experiences and Future Prospects" - Thursday, April 11, 10:00, Room F
In 2014, Bosnia and Herzegovina witnessed one of the most significant social mobilizations in its recent history. The protest wave, which originated in Tuzla, encompassed several riots and a series of demonstrations across the country. A decade later, we have the opportunity to reflect on the 2014 uprisings in Bosnia and Herzegovina and their impact through a presentation of the book "Social Mobilization Beyond Ethnicity" (Routledge, 2020) by Chiara Milan. The book provides a critical analysis of various protest waves that occurred in Bosnia and Herzegovina between 2012 and 2014. What are the mechanisms for successful mobilization "beyond ethnicity" in ethnically divided societies? Can we now consider the protests documented in the book as exceptions to the norm in the country? Is mobilization across ethnic lines still feasible in contemporary Bosnia and Herzegovina? Furthermore, what are the broader implications of such episodes of social mobilization for the post-Yugoslav region? We will address these and other questions in the upcoming edition of the Advanced Research Seminar.
