SCOPE OF WORK
- Monitor and help analyze Government of Croatia legislative priorities and events impacting the broader political scene as well as on human rights, minority issues, and religious freedom.
- Research and analyze trends or changing social dynamics regarding minority groups, to include foreign workers and the LGBTQ+ community.
- Assist with planning outreach and events to promote U.S. human rights-related policies and interests.
- Other duties as requested in support of Political Specialist.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Graduate or Undergraduate studies of Political-Economy, Political Science, Economics, Law, International Relations, History, or Sociology
- Excellent written and spoken Croatian and English language skills required
- Knowledge of or an interest in one or more of the following: human rights, labor rights, regional history, and legislative procedure.
REQUIRED DURATION
From four to six months.
WORK SCHEDULE
Part Time or Full Time, flexible depending on candidate’s availability.
COMPENSATION AND EMPLOYMENT STATUS
All internships are uncompensated. All students participating in the Local Internship Program will be considered volunteers pursuant to 5 U.S.C. § 3111. As such, they will not be “employees” of the U.S. Government or any of its agencies or missions.
MINIMUM AGE
Students must be at least 18 years old at the time of participation in the program.
CITIZENSHIP/LEGAL RESIDENCE
The Local Internship Program is only open to students who are either citizens or legal residents of Croatia. For legal residents, post must verify the citizenship or legal residency status and authorization to participate in a student volunteer program.
DEFINITION OF STUDENT
Applicants must meet the definition of student, as defined in 5 CFR § 308.101: “Student is an individual who is enrolled not less than half-time in a high school*, trade school, technical or vocational institute, junior college, college, university or other accredited educational institution. An individual who is a student is deemed not to have ceased to be a student during an interim between school years if the interim is not more than 5 months and if such individual shows to the satisfaction of the agency that the individual has a bona fide intention of continuing to pursue a course of study or training in the same or different educational institution during the school semester (or other period into which the school year is divided) immediately after the interim.” *NOTE: To be considered for the Local Internship Program, students must have graduated from high school or equivalent secondary school prior to beginning the program and must be at least 18 years old. Also, there is not a break of service for purposes of this requirement if an individual is receiving academic credit for the internship, even if not otherwise taking classes.
TRANSCRIPT AND PERMISSION
Applicants must be in good academic standing at their current educational institution and must provide a certified transcript verifying this. Applicants must also provide written permission from the educational institution at which they are currently enrolled to participate in the Local Internship Program.
SECURITY AND MEDICAL CERTIFICATIONS
Applicants must receive a successful security certification from post prior to beginning the program.
