Center for the Study of Ethnicity, Citizenship and Migration (CEDIM) is a newly established center at the Faculty of Political Science in Zagreb, Croatia. It was founded on the initiative of several young scholars in December 2013. Under the guidance of Ana Matan, Ph.D., the Center gathers researchers working in the fields of citizenship, forced migration, ethnicity, gender and migration studies, as well as expert associates and student volunteers.
The Center aims to promote research excellence in academic fields of citizenship, forced migration, ethnicity, gender and migration studies. However, its goals are not merely academic, as it aims to combine its research activities with various projects and programs in order to achieve greater social and democratic engagement. Its long-term mission is to combine empirical research with policy advocacy and fill in the gap that exists between policy makers, academia and final beneficiaries. Furthermore, by launching the student volunteering program the Center is engaged in building a community of all those involved in the academic life. Finally, the Center wants to provide practical services and programs for various categories of marginalized individuals in society.
The Center’s primary activities are related to research outputs developed within the framework of multinational and multidisciplinary project bEUcitizen (http://beucitizen.eu/) funded by the European Commission within the Seventh Framework Program for Research and Technological Development (FP7). The project is designed to explore various aspects of European citizenship and to identify and analyze the obstacles that European citizens have in exercising their citizenship rights. It is also the first FP7 project involving the Faculty of Political Science.
Vision, mission and activities
The CEDIM aspires to become an institution that will, through its activities, shape public policy and promote high academic standards, inclusive society, political participation and social justice. To ensure its own visibility, the Center plans to organize conferences and symposia for academic and general public, develop project proposals in collaboration with NGOs and other academic institutions, and publish its findings in leading scientific journals in Croatia and abroad. The Center will also work on the development of specific education programs for policy makers, but also for their beneficiaries. The CEDIM wants, in collaboration with interested students, to promote scientific research in the field of social sciences and humanities. Having a vision of an institution with high academic standards, the Center aims to include as many young researchers interested in academic fields of citizenship, forced migration, ethnicity, gender and migration studies.
With the establishment of the Center for the Study of Ethnicity, Citizenship and Migration (CEDIM) the Faculty of Political Science is included in the main European research trends in the areas of their research interests.
