DESCRIPTION:

The objective of the course is to acquaint the student with the interaction of Jews and Arabs in the Middle East from the time of the First Aliyah (Jewish immigration to Palestine) and the birth of Zionism as organized political movement until today. Arab-Jewish relations will be discussed within different political contexts: late Ottoman Period, Mandate Period, State of Israel 1948-1967, State of Israel from 1967-1993, and State of Israel 1993 - present. Though focus is on the Eretz Israel, other Middle Eastern countries with Jewish presence prior to creation of Jewish State will be discussed, in particular Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and Egypt. The course will address interaction between Jews and Arabs in broad variety: from peaceful coexistence to different forms of collision and conflict. The course is interdisciplinary in its approach. Political processes will be analyzed inter alia from the aspects of history, theology, nationalism, economy, ideology, and security.
