DESCRIPTION:
The main aim of the course is research and analysis of media representation of various minority groups in the society. Almost in all countries - does not matter in transition or in developed democracy countries - the problem of dishonest presentation of minorities are existing. Regarding that fact, the course has to show the need of sensitivity for representing minorities in everyday journalism practice. Through fifteen meetings students will learn more on problems of Croatian minorities as well as with the trends in other countries in Europe and elsewhere. The second aim, based on examples from Croatian media, is to give perception on the media influence for strengthening stereotypes and prejudices on minorities in the public. Except for certain topics, students will be presented various case studies on actual media coverage, both in traditional media or/and social media.
Moreover, course will deal with analyses of minority news value in mainstream media, on the contrary to specialized minority programs dedicated exclusively to members of certain minority groups.
